Welcome to TravelLenz. Thanks for stopping by.

We are Malini and Rajesh. We are like you. We love travel.

As most travel lovers with a regular day job, we started out by stealing weekend getaways, driving holidays and a couple of longer trips every year. Having worked and lived in Delhi and Bangalore, we have been fortunate to see a lot of India. And a little more of the bigger world out there. More about us here.

Just like there is a traveller in all of us, there also are countless travel tales and insights we all have within us. Every travel memory and every travel tip we give someone else looking to travel is a mini blog in itself.

Looking back, we wanted to have our tiny space on the internet, this travel blog, as a culmination of each trip, an outlet to share our experience and knowledge with fellow travellers. And thus, back in 2009, long after we had started travelling, was born TravelLenz.

What's TravelLenz All About?

We wanted TravelLenz to not just be the record keeper of our adventures but also act as a commentator and guide to fellow travellers. Which is why we knew we had to blend interest and utility to the character of our blog and make sure it was the right mix of:

Interesting Travel Stories – The “as it happened” versions of our experiences, as we saw and felt first hand, tales from the road, written with love.

Helpful Travel Guides – All the information needed to plan a trip in comprehensive, updated, easy to read guides.

Striking Travel Images – The unforgettable visuals that we saw and captured through our “lenz” and shared here as photos and videos.

This blog is all about the joy and discovery of travel and here is a sum-up of what TravelLenz helps you do:

  • Discover places and helping decide where to go.
  • Plan the trip through by getting all the nitty gritties right.
  • Treat the journey as important as the destination.
  • Pull out all stops at the destination itself – exploring it, see and do all. that needs to be seen and done, taking in a new culture, meeting new people, eating what they eat, et al.
  • Pad up the whole trip planning and travel process with all the required tips, suggestions, alerts et al to make sure it’s one problem free, safe and bang-for-the-buck trip after all.
  • And when we are back, the trip only ends once we relive it all by capturing it here on our blog.

So, there! TravelLenz is about keeping a log of our own travels and to help someone else find their adventure too.

Our most memorable adventures so far

  • Standing at the edge of India’s very own version of the Grand Canyon. You have to see it to believe it. Gandikota, in Andhra Pradesh, is still unspoilt. Go there before it gets too touristy.
  • Catching a ferry across the Brahmaputra to visit the world’s largest river island – an oasis of calm, culture and spirituality and you realise why Majuli in Assam is unmissable.
  • In pristine Arunachal Pradesh, beyond the serene, sleepy village of Wakro, we drove past the stunning Parasuram Kund, all the way up beyond picturesque Walong to Kaho on the Chinese border.
  • Flanking Myanmar, Namdapha, is a special forest, an amazing hotspot of wilderness and biodiversity. We lost ourselves in this unspoilt jungle that’s like no other in India.
  • The magical kingdom of Hampi spreads out before you, with its rocky landscape strewn with temples and remains of a glorious past that will need many a visit to see and feel them all.
  • In our very own backyard, God’s own country, we know Kerala has it all. Yet, we got bowled over by a captivating walk along the Periyar river, in the lovely forest of Thekkady.
  • We can’t decide if it was the heavenly hill kingdom of Mandu or the cultural hotspot of Orchha that we loved more in Madhya Pradesh, the heart of India. Maybe both!
  • A pretty state, the rainiest place and delving deep into the forests there to do the mesmerising, and tiring, Double Decker Root Bridge trek in Cherrapunji, all of 2000 steps one way!
  • We lost ourselves in a magical land strewn with incredible icons of an ancient kingdom. Angkor Wat and the many wonders of this Cambodian wonderland make for an unforgettable trip.
  • In popular Thailand, visiting a hidden gem was very satisfying. We visited the mystical Phanom Rung and Muang Tam, vestiges of the Khmer dynasty, close to the Cambodian border.
  • Taiwan is that rare destination, so much to offer and yet so under-visited. We loved our 12 days in this lovely island that is packed with sights and experiences. And we are going back!
  • Jaisalmer never fails to wow you with the surreal Golden Fort and the sand dunes beyond. Then again, we weren’t prepared to see a ghost village bang in the middle of the Thar desert…
  • We got bowled over by Sikkim’s many magical views and experiences. But then, Gurudongmar, the fantastical lake at over 17000 feet, still took our breath away.
  • It was a dream to do one of India’s most mysterious and challenging treks, Roopkund. The 55 km long trek to the storied skeleton lake, at all of 16000 ft, is one unbelievable experience.
  • Visiting a veritable maze of life and water in the incredible Sunderbans, straddling India and Bangladesh, was a visual treat and the ultimate experience in nature, culture and wildlife.

Travels with the Lenz

For us, like most travellers, the visual imagery of a place says a lot. To leave a sight without capturing it with something more than our eyes is unthinkable. Which is where the Travelling Lenz comes into play.

Be it our trusted DSLR, a handy GoPro or even the ubiquitous mobile phone, clicking the moment completes the experience.

Besides being an integral part of all our blog posts, we have used photos to add another layer to our storytelling. A picture, as the old cliche goes, is worth a thousand words, right?

The Photojourneys can be one visual way of reliving the trip. Selecting the best of all those snaps from a destination, we feel this is a great way to capture the best of a destination through images. We hope you will get the essence of the place and the experience through these images.

The Story behind the Shot is our own way of telling the backstory that led to a memorable moment getting converted into a photograph. Looking again at these unique images, the moment that sparked the clicking of the shutter comes flooding back to us. Hope you enjoy these visual stories too.

Let's stay connected

Great to have you in on the journey! Hope you drop in here to check what’s new.
